Even though CO2 is a gas, increasing or decreasing concentrations will increase or decrease plant growth by making available in higher concentration, that which a plant requires during photosynthesis and respiration. The link below, and also the links found in the below article, give the basic information you need. One thing not mentioned, though, is that like chemical or organic fertilizers, increases beyond a certain point will damage or kill a plant just as surely as high fertilizer concentration.
