Question:

What is the California law about shops keeping my old catalytic converter?

I recently changed my cat and when finished, the shop would not give me back my old cat. they said that by ca law, they have to keep my old cat for 2 weeks in case of inspection. then i asked if i could get it then, (i could tell they didn't want to give it back) but they said sure with a core charge of $50.

Is this right? Please advise.

Thanks!

  1. Yep.

  2. Yes that is correct.  When replacing a Cat the shop has to register the new Cat and label and save the old one for a set period - it's been a while since I had to do this but a couple of weeks seems right.

  3. they didn't want to give it back to you because your cat has precious metals in it like platinum that they can sell for a nice price...its your cat...came off your car that  you purchased...

    let us know what happens....

    Good luck!
