This probably sounds like a very silly question, but I've got conflicting sources - some of which say "sih", others of which say "haih". Which one is it?

  4. Do you mean: yes? or yes (right)

    Yes?

    (Chinese characters: 什麼事?)

    (Pronunciation: shen me s**+ ?)

    Yes (right)

    (Chinese characters: 是 / 對)

    (Pronunciation: s**+ / dui)

  5. Cantonese: hai

    Mandarin: s**+

The Chinese writing system is not based on pronunciation therefore all Chinese use the same writing system. They just pronounce them differently in different places thus the dialects.
