  1. As you are probably aware, 10K gold is 10/24 (41.66%) gold, 14K gold is 14/24 (58.33%) and 18K 18/24 (75%) gold.   However those designations do not specify what other metals make up the other part of the alloy.  I am familiar with alloys with copper, silver, palladium, nickel, zinc, iron, or aluminum, and various combinations of these..  Each of those metals have their own density, and you can generate a list of different combinations at various ratios and calculate the density.

What you will get is a range of densities that will overlap.  In general, it will not be possible to determine the purity and the alloy metals from the measured density, unless the gold is 24K, since gold is heavier than all those other metals I mentioned.

  2. The density of gold alloys depends on the other metal used in making the alloy. Pure gold has a density of 19.32 g/cc. One cubic inch of pure gold weighs 10.18 troy ounces = 0.698 lb (1 troy oz = 0.0685714286 lb)
