Hi this is something I have been a little curious about. I work in a residential dining hall at a university and I have line responsibilities. Every night when I read the menu they always have a symbol that points out what dishes are vegetarian and which are vegan. Vegetarian are things like boca burgers, and vegan items are things like steamed rice. I can easily distinguish between the differences of the foods but what are the differences in these subgroups?

  1. The varieties of Vegetarianism range from those who eat fish and poultry to those who are lacto-vegetarians or lacto-ovo vegetarians.

Vegetarians who will eat all foods except red meat are the most popular type. Lacto means uses milk, ovo means uses eggs, and Vegan means nothing but grains, fruit, vegetables, and nuts.

  2. vegetarians are straight up NO MEAT. Vegans are people that don't eat anything that has a face. Like no eggs, cause chickens have a face,no dairy cause cows have a face, get it?

  3. Donald Watson was a vegetarian, who coined the word Vegan and founded the Vegan Society in 1944, called a vegetarian a step between meat eater and a vegan.

Up to the formation of Vegan society, it was the religion that guided the vegetarians, specially the Hindus Jain, and Buddhists.

Donald Watson added the prevention of cruelty and compassion towards animals extending the life styles.

Vegans are strict vegetarians. Vegetarians do NOT eats meats, but may eat dairy products, and even eggs.

Vegans do not eat dairy products or eggs. Mr Watson was not happy the way the animals were kept for milking. So all the dairy products including butter yogurt and cheese were shunned. The hen and roosters were killed after they were no longer needed for getting eggs, So the eggs were shunned. They do not consume Honey because of cruelty to bees. They do not wear leather or fur to prevent butchering the animals.

The only thing Vegans are allowed to eat in the living world is fungus, this enables them to eat yeast.

  4. Vegetarians don't eat meat, but will eat foods like eggs, milk and cheeses. Vegans don't eat meat or any food that is produced by a living being.

  5. Vegans can't consume leather, meat, fish, eggs, dairy, silk, honey, and any other animal products.  Even glycerin, made from animal bones (in candy and jello) can't be consumed.  Vegetarians do not eat meat and fish.

    but vegan cannot eat those.

some religions like in Jainism ppl are vegans. they don't even eat anything groen underground.

    so i hope this helps

  8. Vegetatian's and vegans both don't eat mean, However vegans dont eat dairy products or eggs, Anything involving an animal...Even with clothes sometimes.

    Vefetartians still eat eggs though

    Vegans are just more hardcore

  9. Vegans won't eat anything from an animal, be it chicken, milk, eggs, honey or gelatin.

Vegetarians vary.  Some will eat eggs, some will eat cheese, it depends.

  10. Vegetarian avoid meat products such as chicken, pork, lamb, beef some eat fish though, it depends on the person.  Vegetarian eat bi-products from the previous food groups, such as milk, eggs, cheese, butter, margarine, yogurt.

Vegan avoid the bi-products also this is for different reasons. Some are religion, health issues (such as lactose problems etc), other get sick eating them. Others just think it is healthier. You can get dairy free products in the supermarket these days if you look for them.  As more people have lactose problems today and other medical conditions, there are more varieties available.

Both eat fruit and vegetables.  Steamed, boilded, fried, grilled, baked.  Hope this clears things for you.
