  1. The 82nd airborne is still an active Airborne unit, while the 101st is currently designated as an "air assault" unit. Both both are pretty similar.

  2. oh! about 9 numbers

  3. The 101st Arborne Division is an air assault division. They are no longer an actual airborne unit. The 82nd is the only airborne division in the US ARMY. There really isn't too much of a difference other than that. The 82nd can operate in a special operations format. Mainly because of their recall status which is 18 hrs or less. They are also based on Ft. Bragg which is the same base that the 3rd and 7th SFG is located. Also, the 1st SFOD-D is located there and the 82nd is involved with many training events with these units. Due to this they operate in combat zones with them because of the support the 82nd can provide and the great working relationship they have with each other. Hope this helps.

PS-The 5th SFG is located in Ft. Cambell which is where the 101st is. I have not experienced it myself, but I would be certain that they also have the same realtionship.

  4. They are different divisions.

  5. Like stated above, the 101st Airborne Division is technically no longer an "Airborne" unit. The 82nd is still on jump status. The 101st is not. They have kept the name for its storied heritage in WWII.

They have transitioned to being an "Air Assault" unit, getting to the battlefield in helicopters rather than parachutes. It is much more practical for how we fight now.

Also, the 101st has a LRS/Pathfinder Company that is on jump status. Each division has one.

And I believe the rapid deployment unit was changed from the 82nd to one of the BCTs in the 101st sometime in the past 2 years. I remember reading an article on it when I was at Campbell.

The 101st has the most helicopters of any division in the military. All Army divisions have one aviation brigade each. The 101st has two so it has twice the Hawks, Chinooks, Kiowas, and Apaches. So it is much more mobile and lethal when its in combat.

  6. The 101st no longer is an Airborne Division.  They are now Air Assault.  They are based at Fort Campbell, KY and are part of the 18th Corps.  They have the most Helicopters of any Division in the US Army and can call on additional helos from the 18th Corps.

The 82nd "All American" Division is the last true Airborne Division in the US Army.  They are based at Fort Bragg, NC.  They too are part of the 18th Corps.  The 82nd is the Armys rapid Deployment Division said to be able to be anywhere in the world in 72hrs, with the USAF's help.  They keep a ready Brigade on stand by 24/7.

  7. Both the 101st (formerly 101st Airborne) Division and the 82nd Airborne Division are units of the US Army, and both have long and distinguished histories.

    82nd & 101st both parachuted into Normandy on D-Day during WW2.
