What is the ELV in Rugby?

Only just heard about it, tried searching on google and could only find that its some experiment on the rules in rugby. Does anyone know what the specific changes are under this experiment.

  1. ELVs or the "elves" are also aimed at taking the referee out of the game, so whistle happy Harry from the northern hemisphere is prevented from deciding the direction of the game.

    Gives players more choice to own and drive the game rather than some gray haired old toss pot that can't get to the break down because he hasn't got the lungs .


  2. main differences are the kicking game and line outs, you no longer have to match numbers in the line outs and you cant take the ball back into the 22 yourself and then kick it out on the full, etc.

  3. Basically, the ELVs (Experimental Law Variations) came about to simplify the game and to speed it up. One problem was the amount of time wasted while penalty kicks were taken. Regrdless of what people in the Northern Hemisphere may say, the ELVs were developed in the Northern Hemisphere but trialled down in our hemisphere.
