"According to the Office for National Statistics, weekly median gross earnings for a woman working part-time are £145.60; for a man [working part-time] £137.80" and

"If you compare women who aren't married or cohabiting with men who aren't married or cohabiting... Hourly pay for the women is £8.82; for men £8.72" http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/columnists/guest_contributors/article4221357.ece

So what is the UK government's Equality Minister doing about this blatant sexism?

  1. You make a very good point. ;)

  2. Ha! Kommissar Harman rears her ugly head again!

  3. There are lies, d**n lies and then there are statistics.

Do your stats take into account the length of the persons contract?  The type of work?  I doubt it.

Blatant sexism is when a man or women is being paid more or less *for doing the same job* for no other reason than their

Prove that and maybe I'll care.

Let me spell this out for you.

If you can prove to me that a male accountant and a female accountant are paid differently in the same firm this is sexism.

If you are talking about access to certain high paid jobs that is a completely different issue.  Unless you feel a part time cleaner should be paid the same as a part time social worker then you live in the wrong country.

Drive:  I don't mean to sound callous but there is no question to answer here .  A 10p difference is not reason enough to shout sexism ESPECIALLY when the job type is not even taken into account.

Men are not discriminated against on pay in the UK.  The equal pay legislation in the UK guarantees against that.

If you want to pick an issue to fight men’s rights on then look at the decline of industrial jobs in places like the north of England, Glasgow or Northern Ireland where 1000s of men have lost traditional manual jobs they've held for years and feel unable completely disenfranchises from modern society.

There are issues for men in employment but to suggest that lower pay is one of these factors only distracts from the real issues which affect men in employment today and does them no service.

This post is trying to suggest something which is simply not true in any way shape or form.

  4. Is it sexism? Or is it just a case of women in better-paying positions? And don't say, "Well, _______ thinks it's sexism, so . . . " because I don't.

  5. The point is, when the stats seem to favor men they call it sexism that must be legislated against.  When men seem to be on the short end, they don't care.

  6. Rio Madeira, don't you think it is rather amazing people like you, sam and Tracey call anti-feminists illogical and insane? Hypocritical rather, because I've heard n times from y'all saying the wage gap is due to sexism. If that is due to sexism, this is too, and we should all shut our traps.

But in the wage gap case, there was proof it was fiction and feminist hogwash.

But there are no positions for part-time jobs where men or women dominate. Both should be earning the same on an average. Would full-time women workers take lower-paying jobs than men and part-timers take higher paying ones than men? That doesn't make sense if you think logically.

Men have better negotiating skills, take more risks (yes, even in part-time jobs) and are more likely to do overtime. All the more reason to say that this wage gap against men is due to sexism against men.

But of course, Jim, nothing will be done. It is only equality when women are at an advantage. Men can rot and go to h**l for all the 'Equality' (Ha ha ha!) minister cares.
