  2. The Peerage is a system of titles of nobility in the United Kingdom, part of the British honours system. The term is used both collectively to refer to the entire body of titles, and individually to refer to a specific title. All British honours, including peerage dignities, spring from the Sovereign, who is considered the fount of honour.

    British Peers are of five ranks:

    Duke/Duchess

    Marquess/Marchioness

    Earl/Countess

    Viscount/Viscountess

    Baron/Baroness

    The Peerage of France was a distinction within the French nobility which appeared in the Middle Ages. The prestigious title and position of Peer of France was held by the greatest and highest-ranking members of the French nobility.

    French Peers are of six ranks:

    Duc/Duchesse

    Marquis/Marquise

    Comte/Comtess

    Vicomte/Vicomtess

    Baron/Baronne or Baroness

    Chevalier/Dame

    The Spanish nobility are the persons who possess the legal status of nobility, and the system of titles and honours of Spain and of the former kingdoms that constitute it. Some nobles possess various titles that may be inherited, but the inheritance and creation of titles is entirely at the grace of the King of Spain. Legitimate and natural patrilineal descendants of a nobleman are also noble, as are those female-line descendants whose inheritance of a legal title of nobility is recognized.

    Spanish Peers are of six ranks:

    Duque / Duquesa

    Marqués / Marquesa

    Conde / Condesa

    Vizconde / Vizcondesa

    Barón / Baronesa

    Señor / Señora

  3. Here is the order of precedence:

    King/Queen Regent

    Queen Consort/Prince Consort

    Prince/Princess who are also often Royal Duke/Duchess,Marquess,Earl,

    Baron as well.

    Non-Royal aristocracy:

    Duke/Duchess

    Marquess/Marchioness

    Earl/Countess

    Baron/Baroness

    Many titled arisocrats hold more than one title. An excellent example of this is Charles,Prince of Wales who is also Duke of Cornwall, Duke of Rothesay, Earl of Carrick and Baron Renfrew, Lord of the Isles, and Prince and Great Steward of Scotland.

  4. 5.  Duke

    6.  Marquess

    7.  Earl

    8.  Viscount

    9.  Baron

  5. England:

    Duke/Duchess

    Marquess/Marchioness

    Earl/Countess

    Viscount/Viscountess

    Baron/Baroness (aka Lord/Lady)

    Baronet/Lady

    Knight/Lady

    In England a Baron is a sort of generic term used for all the peers.  You won't generally hear somebody listed as the Baron of Somewhich, but Lord Somewhich or Lord of Somewhich.

    France:

    Duc/Duchesse

    Marquis/Marquise

    Comte/Comtess

    Vicomte/Vicomtess

    Baron/Baronne or Baroness

    Chevalier/Dame

    Spain:

    Duque/Duquesa

    Marque/Marquesa

    Conde/Contesa

    Viconde/Vicontesa

    Varon/Varonesa

    Caballero/Dama

    There are actually lots of versions of each in France, Spain and Italy due to the many languages spoken in each country.  These are just the more modern versions.

    Germany is where you get really mixed up:

    Herzog = Duke

    Pfalzgraf = Duke (or thereabouts)

    Erzherzog = Archduke

    Markgraf or Margrave = Marquess

    Graf or Grave = Count

    Waldgraf = Baron

    Ritter = Knight

    Versions of the German ranks are used over most of Eastern Europe, especially Graf.  There are lots of different spellings and pronunciations from Prussia to Greece.  I have a list of the female versions as well but I can't remember them off the top of my head.  Generally speaking you just add an 'in' to the end of the title, like Grafin.

  6. 1. Duke

    2. Marquis

    3. Count

    4. Viscount

    5. Baron
