What is the Fete de la Musique in Paris?

I am going to be in Paris from June 20-24, 2007 and read something about this. What exactly is it? Is it a large scale celebration?

Have fun! Paris is great.. there is so much happening and it is so routine for Parisians to be involved in art and culture that rarely you have any strange overwhelmed ushers or attendees.

It was established some 20/25 years ago.

On June 21st, everyone goes out, people are allowed to play in the streets and have fun.

Well that was the first few years, now it's more of a commercial thing with a little bit of music and lots of people trying to sell you drinks and food.

At the begining any wanabee musician or good level amateur was in the streets playing in turn to a large crowd of passers by.

Nowadays it's more like big concerts in city center with more predictable music styles...

on Summer day, June 21st, lots of mini-concerts are organised in the streets...

there are the "official" ones, on the big squares and there are semi-professionals and amateurs in every street (especially in the Latin Quarter though)

bands that wanna play have to register first to "book" their street-space but if you can play the guitar, you can still stroll around and find some place to do your thing

so people go out in the streets, walk here and there, pause when they like the music and then go further...

some roads are even closed to traffic so you can walk right in the middle of the street (well the sidewalks are crowded with drums and baffles anyway LOL)

oh and it's not just in Paris, there are concerts and stuff in every city

and personally, i love it... it's really fun and a weird way to (re)discover the city
