  1. there is no GENERAL code.. it is just a bit conservative usually...depends on location.

Like metros, there r western styled women as well as traditional styled. But, in other locations esp down south it is more conservative.I guess Kurtas and jeans r very common now as it is semi western, semi traditional. then there r salwars, saris etc. then if u r up for western.. jeans and tees..

guys, they wear usually pants and shirts.

  2. generally tourists should not expose too much - wearing a strappy top is okay on a really hot day or in goa's beaches or in a five star or around very touristy places - other places - please avoid.  skirts till or beyond the knees are fine.  short skirts, can be worn to parties / events / but not generally.

u can dress in indian clothes if u wish - but no compulsion.

  3. Depends upon which part of India you will be in.

    Female:

It is usually a set of Salwar/ churidar ( a pyjama like ) , kameez meaning a shirt and a dupatta which is a 2 and half yard scarf.

Modern girls wear anything from jjeans and pants to skirts. Like any Western girl. But is usually decently covered in publuc, No exposure of flesh is liked.

Women wear Saris - a 6 yard of cloth. Wrapped beautifully over a skirt and blouse.

Men wear all Western clothes usually.

  4. In India no prescribed dress code you come here and it is your sweet will whatever you want to wear you can. However it depends upon in which part of india you want to go,for e.g if you want to go in North India a salwar suit and 6 yards saree in general ladies wear and whereas in south ladies wear only Saree's.Hence this is my suggestion you remain in your comfort you wear as you like.
