  1. I find North Germans the friendliest, followed by southerners and then Austrians. While I found Austrians to be friendly in some ways (they invited me to their home to have dinner), I found them quite cranky and narky in general. Vienna is okay though and Innsbruck is actually friendly enough. I met a xenophobic atmosphere in rural Austria and they have a problem with foreign visitors, even if you can speak German.
    I found Germans more relaxed actually and certainly more open.
    Austrians have their own spoken dialects but are happy to speak Hochdeutsch. However, in Switzerland, they speak and promote their crappy, unintelligible 'Swiss German'. I often think it's a ploy to shut out foreigners, as they're even more closed-minded and xenophobic than the Austrians.
