As far as I know it's supposedly a secret society bent on the destruction of the Catholic church and the Vatican.

The Illuminati are the groups of secret societies that run the worlds banking, religion and government. The web of secret societies are hidden behind the scenes and right before our eyes daily in the media and public life. The goal is to have a New World Order, in which they control the masses of sheeple to a one world system of money, government and religion.

It was a non-affiliated splinter group of the Freemasons that existed in Bavaria from 1776-1784.  There continues to be a group of conspiracy nuts that believe the Illuminati is a secret inner circle of the Freemasons that works behind the scenes to pull the strings for all world governments with the intent to set up a one world government.
