Not allowed, for our own good. Prevents us falling into zina, best to keep away from such fitnahs. Saves us a lot of heartache and all that kind of stuff. At the end of the day, Islam only wants what's best for us, and by not allowing us to date, it's protecting us from so many unnecessary things that we don't need to get into, 'cos life's too short. Life is for worhsipping Allah (SWT), for concentrating on getting the best in the Next Life, not to be too caught up in this worldly life, yes we're allowed to have desires, etc but we shouldn't become slaves to our desires else we'll be too busy chasing after worldly stuff, getting involved in fitnah, etc and lose focus on the bigger purpose in life. How many kids/people do you know who get dumped by their bf/gf, get pregnant, don't know how to "move on" after a relationship, etc etc. That's all their life is about, they spend so much time and effort on these things, and their parents encourage it. But Islam teaches us morals and self-respect, don't sleep around with just anybody and everybody. That's why marriage is half your faith, so important in Islam, 'cos it protects you from so many things, makes so many otherwise haraam things now halal for you, and eliminates possibilities of people falling into "love" and "relationship" traps, etc.

Dating IS allowed in Islam, but only if there is another person with the couple, and there is no unlawful things such as kissing and s*x, but its allowed for them to go out with each other under the supervision of another, this way they may get to know each other, which is encouraged, as it is better than marrying someone who you do not know.
