  2. 4:3 If ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly with the orphans, Marry women of your choice, Two or three or four; but if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one, or (a captive) that your right hands possess, that will be more suitable, to prevent you from doing injustice.

4:129 Ye are never able to be fair and just as between women, even if it is your ardent desire: But turn not away (from a woman) altogether, so as to leave her (as it were) hanging (in the air). If ye come to a friendly understanding, and practise self-restraint, Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.

These two verses show that polygmy is tolerated rather then encouraged. It should only be practiced if it will bring about a greater good,eg,there are widow women and orphans that need to be cared for and you cant do it adequately without marriage.

Remember that the body of the man who is injust and shows favoritism between his wives will be bent.

  3. Islam permits polygamy on condition that the husband treats the wives in a just manner. However the number of wives should not exceed four. It is sinful and mean to have extra-marital relations. As per the strict code of Islam, on no account should a man stray towards another woman. A man who cannot satisfy his thirst for s*x with one wife is allowed to resort to polygamy. Islam completely bans the heinous practice of disowning responsibility after having sexual relation with a woman. Instead, Islam permits, in unavoidable circumstances, a sacred arrangement for keeping wives legitimately, where they are protected and allowed their rights without any partiality. There are contexts where the practice of polygamy becomes more of a social necessary than a personal need, especially when the number of women in a society exceeds that of men. Generally women out number men. During war times the proportion varies further, as men are more likely into account situations like this, when polygamy becomes socially indispensable, and permits it conditionally.

  4. Polygamy (more correct term, polygyny) is not an article of faith in Islam.  In addition, it is not a pillar of Islam and not a commandment from Allah in the Qur'an.  Monogamy is the rule; polygyny, a very, very strict exception with very, very strict rules, directives, and regulations which must be adhered to.

A man must think very long and hard about wanting to take a second (third and/or fourth) wife.  It is hard enough providing for maintaining himself, let alone a first wife.

  5. Don't do it unless there are women in the streets who are unable to look after themselves.

For the prospective thumb-downers, why, didn't the related ayet come after war, when many women were left without husbands to take care of them? At least that's how it is explained to us?
