I am currentely in Italy and there are 3 types of trains here:

1) is called Eurostar and is the fastest and most reliable, it get you to ur destination twice as fast as regional trains. They are usually used to reach cities faster and are also the most comfortable and the best looking

2) Then you have trains called intercity which only stop at cities, more major stops but are cheaper and slower than Eurostar trains

3) You have the regional trains (treni regionali) which are the slowest and cheapest and stop at every stop and these are also the least reliable as you can get delays once in a while

Hope this helps! Have been here for more than a year and have used the trains a lot so the information is totally accurate and up to date!
