What is the Japanese attitude to piercings and/or tattoos? I'm NOT saying EVERY Nihonjin is like this!?

I know that the Yakuza (gangsters, basically) are really heavily tattooed and non-Yakuzas don't approve of yakuza. However, I've no idea about whether there are any specific tattoos the Japanese don't like.

Or how they feel about piercings.

I'm from the UK have two holes in each ear and my belly done atm. I'm also planning on getting my wrist pierced, but I don't think I want tattoos.

I'm asking about Japanese attitudes as I'm going there for my year abroad for uni in two years time.

  1. There should be no problem with your piercings in Japan. The Japanese culture has no bad attitudes towards them. Some individuals may, but it is like that everywhere in the world. Your ears and navel piercings are rather common .. the wrist one seems a little odd though. You may want to hold that one off until you are back from Japan. It's just that your wrist is very visible and you will be using your hands to communicate and touch things. But, you can very well pierce your wrist if it means a lot for you to do now. In all honesty though, I would hold off from it. Then you would only be showing ear piercings which are completely norm. Have a great time in Japan!
