What is the L signal on a radar detector

i have a cobra ESD 9560 (i think lol) and sometimes an L shows up and it makes a weird sound, not like a beep... what is that

The L you are seeing is a warning for police laser (LIDAR) (see sources). Police are using LIDAR more frequently to measure speed. LIDAR is essentially laser, a narrow beam of light that only needs to hit your vehicle for .2 seconds (2 tenths of a second) to measure your speed. Most radar detectors claim that they alert to police laser, but with .2 seconds between the alert and when your speed is measured, you might as well pull over if you are going too fast when your radar detector alerts to laser.

If you are concerned about laser, your only alternative is a laser jammer (also legal to use in most states). A laser jammer detects the incoming laser beam and jams the speed reading on the gun, allowing you time to check your speed and turn off the jammer.
