What is the MOST I can earn WITH OUT having to file a Tax Return?

I am a single, full time student, over 18, living at home in CA with my parents, with a seasonal job... what is the maximum income i can earn with out having to file an income take return and pay taxes? I tried looking it up on the IRS website, but couldn't find what i needed.

  1. Depends on your filing status.  It sounds like you are a dependent.  Limit would be $5450 for income that isn't from self employment.  If you have self employment income, then the limit is $400.

    At irs.gov there's a nice table on page 5 of publication 17, but the one out there has last year's numbers - most of them go up a little every year.


  2. It is the amount of the standard deduction for a single person.  For 2008 it is $5450.

  3. Wages $5450 (US citizen).

    Self-employment $400.
