  1. Individual Ready Reserve

All Marines must serve 8 years, but not all on active or reserve duty.  they can spend the remainder (after typically 4) in the IRR.  In the IRR you are required to maintain your uniforms, stay fit and be call-up-able.

In the IRR you don't have to attend drills or do any other active things, except for maybe occasional administrative checks.

  2. IRR - Individual Ready Reserve

The Marine Forces Reserve (MARFORRES) (also known as the United States Marine Corps Reserve (USMCR)), a part of the United States Marine Corps, is the largest command in the Marine Corps.

The mission of Marine Forces Reserve is to augment and reinforce active Marine forces in time of war, national emergency or contingency operations, provide personnel and operational tempo relief for the active forces in peacetime, and provide service to the community.

MARFORRES is comprised of two groups of Marines and Sailors. The first, known as the Select Marine Corps Reserve (SMCR), are those Marines that belong to reserve units and drill one weekend a month and two weeks a year. The second group is known as the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR). The IRR is composed of Marines that have finished their active duty enlistments however their names remain on the books to be called up in case of a war or other emergency. Participation in the IRR involves the Marine calling their local reserve station once a year to check in. Both groups are essential. Reserve Marines are equipped and trained to the same standards as active Marine forces. The Individual Ready Reserve (IRR) is a force of former United States military personnel who have completed active duty and do not receive regular pay or training, but may, under exceptional circumstances, be recalled to active duty. ...

  3. He pretty much hit it right on the head. These days though IRR is not like it used to be. Used to be every now and then you get a letter telling you to call someone blah blah blah but with one war and one mistake still rolling on they track you a little closer. Your not required to show up for drills or any of the things regular reserves are required to do but they will want to know where your located.
