While visiting Myrtle Beach, we were invaded by lots on giant insects that came out at night when we were by the pool. They were about 2.5-3 inches long and about a half inch wide. They were black or very dark brown and had antenna about 1.2 inch long that pointed away from the body. They squashed quite easily when we stepped on them.

  1. Google some pictures of the American cockroach.  It's not quite as long as you state, but they are large insects.

  2. I am not sure but you can try these -

  3. They were most likely a cockroach.  Not the kind that infests houses, though you sometimes find them indoors seeking water or warmth.

We (I am a South Carolinian) jokingly call them out state symbol...the Palmetto Bug.  Not impressive, I know.
