What is the NHL draft?

The National Hockey League draft is almost identical to the drafting--selection--of the top young players from schools, colleges, and youth leagues in other sports, like basketball.

The team that has been the least successful gets to pick first; the team that has won the Stanley Cup, pro hockey's highest award, picks last.  Every other team is somewhere on the continuum, based on their  standing in the league for the season.

Team management can also swap existing players for those whose skills/positions are more needed on a given team at the moment, and can swap draft positions to choose young players for experienced ones.

The draft is a good way to build up a team with young players who hopefully, have long, successful careers ahead of them.  In football, for example, Chuck Noll, coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1970s built a multi-Superbowl team essentially on the NFL Draft!

It's when all the teams pick the best 18 year old kids and basically set them on the track to go to college for one year, then leave and try and make it in the pros.  Also see, f***ing the Minnesota Gopher program.

Its how they bring players in. They draft players from college and the team with the worst season before, gets the first picks.

When they pick a player between 18 and 21. After that, they are the only team who can sign that player for the next 3 years. If they don't, the player is elligible for the draft again.
