The first answer is correct.  The Irish Times is the most respected newspaper in Ireland.  The Irish Independent may sell the most copies but it does not have the same depth of news and its back page tends to be on the 'tabloid' side.

Other newspapers are the Evening Herald, the Echo and then various local newspapers such as the Belfast one mentioned.  There are also various free papers Metro and Herald am being just two.

Many of the British newspapers are on sale here but would be sensationalist rather than newsworthy, eg. Star and Mirror.

If you want you can read the Independent on the web www.independent.ie.  This is free. The site also gives you access to several regional newspapers.  The Irish Times is a pay to view website.

Don't know about the best but the Belfast News Letter is famously the oldest English language daily newspaper in the world. It started in 1737 and it's still going strong! One of its claims to fame is that it was the first newspaper in Europe to print the American Declaration of Independence, apparently before England's King George even saw it! More recently it played a very important role in the Northern Ireland peace process but it has also won awards for its reporting of international issues. It has a website nowadays so you can take a look at the kind of stuff it covers, but it's a mix of local, national and international. It has some good writers too. Whatever about its past, the Belfast Newsletter is very polkitcally alligned towards a stridently Unionist point of view, and I have to say it but like most Northern Ireland newspapers it is very parochial. It goes nowhere near the quality of the Irish Times.

It claims to be "the newspaper of the record" which it isn't quite, but it's still the best quality and the most reliable.

There is also the "Irish Independent" which is more widely sold but is more politically biassed towards one political party.

The Irish Independent is the top selling newspaper with a circulation of 163,157 and a readership of 535000.  This is followed by the Irish Times with a circulation of 116,950 and a readership of 336,000, according to the IAPI.
