Do we stop work,(not that i am asking for this reason)? Does everything close down? Can anybody recall what happened when KING GEORGE passed away? I've always wondered about this.

  1. Don't know - or care - but I'm loving the answer from Richard S and think THAT should be the new protocol!

  2. i think we get a national holiday

  3. I don't care what official protocol is. I'll just carry on as normal, except that I'll not be looking forward to King Chuck. Hopefully, we'll have a Republic sorted out before then.

  4. State mourning, or in the case of monarchies, court mourning, refers to displays of mourning behavior on the death of a public figure or member of a royal family. The degree and duration of public mourning is generally decreed by a protocol officer. It was not unusual for the British court to declare that all citizens should wear full mourning for a specified period after the death of the monarch, or that the members of the court should wear full- or half-mourning for an extended period.

Yet a short interruption of work in the civil service may result from one or more days of closing the offices, especially on the day of the state funeral. Under British law, however, a monarch accedes to the throne the moment their predecessor dies, not when they are crowned.

In the United Kingdom, the Royal Standard is never flown at half-mast, because there is always a monarch on the throne. On the other hand, the principle of continuity of the state must be respected. The principle is reflected in the French saying "Le Roi est mort, vive le Roi!" ("The king is dead, long live the king!"). Regardless of the formalities of mourning, power must be handed on; if the succession is uncontested, that is best done immediately.

  5. On the day she dies, every single one of her subjects will be obliged to do a little dance and make a little love.

Oh, and get down tonight also.

Edit: Seven thumbs down? That's a personal best, I think.

  6. Its possible that when she does there will be a collective day of mourning, many people as they have in the past come out on the streets, and  also watched on TV when a royal, like Diana passed away, and they had the funeral cortege through London.

  7. She's going after Victoria's record ( 63 years and 7 months) so we don't have to worry about this until at least 2016....

  8. On the day George VI died, work continued. On the day of his funeral, which was a State Occasion, work did stop.

The King's coffin lied in state for many days,so that the public could pay their respects. The lying-in-state procession and the funeral procession involved the full pageantry that was witnessed during the Queen Mother's funeral, except that sailors pulled the gun carriage through the streets to Westminster Hall, instead of horses.

When a monarch died, the heir immediately assumes the reign;in the past this has meant that the Royal Standard(Flag) does not fly at half-mast over the Palace. But,today it is quite probable that the Union Jack will, since the public wants some symbol of remembrance to fly over the Palace(remember how upset the public was when Diana died;they wanted the flag to fly at half-mast over Buckingham Palace in memory of the princess).

  9. The death is announced by the Queen's physician and posted on the gates of Buckingham Palace, and in the next edition of the Times. If the Times follows tradition, the front page will have a thick black border.

Shortly after, Charles will be declared King, and a national holiday will occur for mourning the Queen.

I expect the funeral will be another national holiday as well.

Charles' coronation will be about 6 months to a year afterwards, and William will be declared heir apparent.

I think Charles may opt to be called King George VII, rather than Charles IV.

  10. There will be an official day of mourning and then another day for her funeral.  Which will probably be  followed by Charles' coronation in a few months..
