  1. Running a computer.

Especially if you want a faster computer that doesn't crash or get as many viruses (virii?) as Windows.

  2. Linux is a driver operating system similar to UNIX but competitive to Microsoft Windows and MAC OS. The only difference is that Linux is FREE and probably better and faster (that is for debate but my experience tells me that).

You can run software and install software on Linux just like Windows. Even transfer files between Windows and Linux with only few tiny differences.

  3. For free!

  4. After reading through the previous 6 answers, I'm not satisfied.

    What is Linux?

Linux is an open-source "kernel", or the heart and organs of an operating system which is the most difficult part to write. This kernel is used to power anything that you see, and even more so, the things you don't see, on a computer running Ubuntu or Fedora for example. There are different "distributions" of Linux, with their own addons and software. The most common of these addons and software is a user interface program like X11, along with a window manager like Gnome. Those two together create everything you see on Linux. They do not come by default.

    Who is Linux for?

Answer: Everyone, yes, everyone, but gamers. There are several programs designed for education, work (Like word processing and spreadsheets), web browsing, graphics and media, servers, lots of other stuff and use on Linux. Unfortunately, few games work directly on Linux, (As opposed to using a virtual machine) even if you use Windows virtualization software like WINE. But for many, the other features are enough.

Why would I or another person use Linux?

Not everyone can afford Windows or Mac OS, and considering the fact that as far as work goes, it's almost entirely compatible with Microsoft Office, it's great for people who just want to have a good, reliable, fast machine that can do the basics. It's also an economical and practical solution for enterprise use as the software costs very little, if anything at all, and anti-virus software is not needed urgently.

  5. its for apple PCs. os linux is operating system its developing software like video editing or photos editing. this is a advance software for people who wants to make software video editing or photos editing and much more

  6. Depends on which distribution you get. If you get PHLAK, then it's for hacking. If you get BackTrack, then it's for testing security. If you get puppy linux or feather linux, then it can be run off a flash drive. If you got something like Red Hat linux, then it could be used as an alternative to an OS that you have to pay for because linux is free. It all depends on your distro.

  7. Linux is more for developing software applications its more of a open source Operating system
