  1. The Oort cloud is thought to comprise two separate regions: a spherical outer Oort cloud and a disc-shaped inner Oort cloud, or Hills cloud. Objects in the Oort cloud are largely composed of ices such as water, ammonia and methane. Astronomers believe that the matter comprising the Oort cloud formed closer to the Sun, and was scattered far out into space by the gravitational effects of the giant planets early in the Solar System's evolution

  2. its freaking huge!

think of it as a fuzzy brown ball that surrounds the Solar System.  Sorta like a walnut shell.

its like 1-2 LIGHTYEARS across and when the next person says to you that Voyagers 1 and 2 have 'left the Solar System', just mention the word "oort"

(i like to stand behind them, make flapping motions with my arms and say "Oort!  Oort! Oort!")

((i get thrown out of a lot of astronomy seminars that way... and Burger Kings, too))

  3. A spherical cloud of comets and small bodies that surround our solar system.
