  1. It is where the optic nerves in the brain cross each other.  The right optic nerve crosses into the left side of the brain and the left optic nerve crosses into the right side of the brain.

  2. The optic chiasm is where half of the fibers from each eye cross to the opposite side of the brain.  The end result is that the right half of the brain handles the left field of vision, and vice versa.
