As in map terms, the BOLTS system.

  1. Sounds like this has something to do with topography mapping.  I don't remember any system called Bolts, but 60 years ago, we would set up a central (orientation) point, establish the exact latitude and longitude location by "shooting" the North Star.  From that point, we would make a topography map of the area by measuring the angle and distance to various points.
