What is the Origin of The State?

What is the origin of The State, based on the Economic Theory?

It's an assignment given to us for our Social Studies class... but I'm having hard luck on the searching for it.

Based on the economic theory, how did the state come to be?

Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but the state is used in an economy to protect private property rights, punish force and fraud, and provide when the market fails.  People came together and decided that if they would all submit their own 'rights' to use coercion on others and provide punishment for such actions, that they would all be better off.
