  1. It allows parental/official censorship of reading materials for youth but censorship is outlawed when child becomes adult.

It confuses me psychlogically that somethng is wrong for one human but O.K. for another simply because of age.

If it is wrong or right for one age group, it should be wrong or right for all age groups.

  2. Reading something that you do not understand means it is not meant for you.  Your mind might not be developed enough for that material

Example: if you give me an instruction book about how to build a bridge, I would not be able to understand the text.  Therefore it would be useless to me.

The same applies if you give a 5 year old a book that is meant for a 10 year old, s/he might not be able to understand the text.

    "-"

  3. Not sure if this is what you mean but I interpret this statement to mean that an age appropriate book allows the child to feel an accomplishment once the book is read. If he reads beyond what he can understand it could stop his interest in books. I think anything that keeps a child interested in reading would be a good book.

  4. stunting? i can a imagine if you only read books for your age you would not learn about other peoples experiences, it might give you a dissillusioned image of the world

  5. Nothing beats common sense.  Children like adults are individuals.  I am sick of someone labeling something as "one size fits all".

    Edit

I am certainly glad that I grew up before "age appropriate books.  I read because I wanted to read and I read anything I could find.  It totally blows my mind to think of all I would not have read if I had only age appropriate reading material.  I shudder to think of all I would not have learned.
