What is the SCIENTIFIC proof for Doomsday?

So they say in 2012 on December 21st that the world will end because of the Mayan Calendar ending. Please give me SCIENTIFIC 100% sure proof and opinions. No guesses please. Will we die on this day? What will happen when the poles shift? Will we die? What will happen on December 22nd? Please keep stupid answers to yourself.

I really think the question should be, "what educated person has investigated and proven, the doomsday theroy", keeping that in mind there has been none, although some have predicted a possibility of happening, they themselves have kept the possibilities to almost none, in fact i haven't heard of anyone with a theory say it would happen on dec 12.

in fact i read an article, yes through yahoo, one day that basically said that all current therories are a result of the question that if doomsday was dec 12 2012 how would it happen, ... no real theroies really answer the question you ask

There is no scientific proof for something that isn't going to happen.  Here are the claims and the refutations, along with references to scientific sources, not YouTube.

The Mayan Calendar - Their calendar was done in ages or cycles and their years ended at the winter solstice.  The current cycle ends December 21, 2012.  They didn’t predict the end of the world, it was only the end of that cycle.  Their civilization died out several hundred years before the end of the cycle, so no new cycle was added.

Alignment with the Galactic Center – The alignment was supposed to be in 1998.  We will be 6 degrees off from true alignment in 2012.  Because the sun is one-half of a degree wide, it will take the December solstice sun 36 years to precess through the Galactic equator This happens every 26,000 years. The Earth has been through it 173,076 times and humans 7 times.  

Polar shift – the poles are moving all the time and we don’t notice.  A complete 180 degree reversal occurs over a period of thousands of years.  The North Magnetic Pole is slowly drifting across the Canadian Arctic. The Geological Survey of Canada keeps track of this motion by periodically carrying out magnetic surveys to redetermine the Pole's location. The most recent survey, completed in May, 2001, determined an updated position for the Pole and established that it is moving approximately northwest at 40 km per year.  Although fast by geological standards, reversals are by no means quick on the human time scale. They take roughly 5,000 years, with estimates ranging from 1,000 years and 8,000 years.



Niburu (Planet X) - It doesn't exist. The Doomsayers predicted that it was to hit Earth in 2003. When it didn't show up, they just moved it out to 2012 to coincide with the end of the Mayan calendar.

Apophis (2004MN4) – A yellow alert for this asteroid (for the 2029 pass) was originally issued in 2001.  After more points were added to its orbit, they found it wasn't going to hit us and the alert was canceled.

But the reason "Doomsday" came into play was because the Mayan calender ended on this date. There are other ancient calenders that ended then, too. So people assume that specific date is the date the entire world will "end". I personally think it is utterly ridiculous.

If there was scientific proof, there would be more worried scientist. 2012 is just one of MANY doomsdays like many that we have, funnily enough, lived though without mishap. There is no reason to belive that just because they stopped writing the calender that the world will end. Science cannot state that their is or is not a comet that we have not seen coming to collect the Earth.

When the magnetic poles shift, our compasses will point to the south pole. That in itself will not be deadly, but a plane or two may come down because of it.

well theres a lot of scientists say about it ill list the most common ones i know. first a pole switch, if the poles switch there is a possiblity we could die. what happns during a pole switch it the "Big Magnet" in the center of the earth will switch and one of our asmosphesre (sorry wrong spelling) that keeps the suns deadly particles away from the inside of the earth. during a pole switch it will go away. the pole switch could last hours or days and even months! and our regular atmosphere could be blown away and we could end up like mars! scientists are not 100% sure this will happen on this day

But as far as the poles shifting, nah, we wouldn't necessarily die.  Though I've heard a theory that Mars was going through a similar event many moons ago when a particularly large solar flare came through.  Since the magnetic field was weakened by being fragmented and all shifty, the solar flare that would've been deflected instead wiped off the atmosphere.

I watched the history channel special about the end of the world. It was really interesting. They talked about all the mathematics that the Mayans did. How their calendar was more sophisticated than the calendars now, and how, to this day, none of their predictions on the calender have been wrong. Anyways, I checked the history channel website to see if there are any new doomsday shows, and I found one. There is no scientific proof for doomsday.

December 2012 is simply the end of the cycle of life on the Mayan calander, and the reason they ended their calender on that date is because it marks a rare celestial alignment, when they believed their gods would return to earth.  This is what happens when you try to merge science with religion.

As far as the polar shift goes, its part of the earths natural cycle for the poles to shift.  It happen every 300,000 or so years.  It is usually proceded by a weakening of the earths magnetic field followed by more increased movement of the north and south poles.  This could also include the formation of more than magnetic north or south pole.  Finally they shift and the natural equilibrium comes back.  Science is unsure of how or why this has happened in the past but it has happened.  While the mangnetic field is weakened we will have an increase in the amount of solar radiation hitting the earth, but it is not a doomsday.  Life survived it before.

Some people may die during these events, but people are dying right now due to drout and starvation around the world.  The current climate change on earth is creating new weather patterns and changing the location of where our best farmlands will be in the future.  People will eventually adapt to it if the Earth does correct itself first.  

We are adaptable. We will survive.

December 22nd will appear to be like any ordinary day to anybody who is not an astronomer.  There will be some "end of the world" parties (similar to those we had for Y2K) and I will probably still have to go to work the next day.  

Nothing will change.

The short answer to your question is no. the world is not going to end in 2012. There is no scientific proof, or evidence for that matter. People think that the world is going to end because that’s when the mayan calendar ends. If this is why the world is going to end then we might as well say that the world is going to end on December 31 2009 because no calendars have been printed for 2010 yet. There are a couple theories on how the world will supposedly end in 2012. I will give you examples, and shoot the ideas down for you.

The most popular idea is that planet x, is going to come to the earth and block the sunlight. First of all, it is not “the planet x” it’s “a planet x”. planet x is a generalized term that caught on a couple hundred years ago that was used to describe unknown planets of our solar system. Neptune was once a planet x. astronomers calculated that the orbital period of Uranus was affected by another object, probably a planet, that was beyond Uranus. They calculated the orbital period of this planet x, and found where it would be at a specific time. They saw the planet, and it was no longer considered planet x. it got its name- Neptune. Scientists miscalculated the orbital period of Neptune being affected by another planet, but by chance their miscalculations revealed Pluto. This icy world was also considered planet x, and was first seen in 1930. It was considered a planet until 2006 when it was demoted to a dwarf planet, and now a plutoid. Sedna, quaour, eris, and ceris were all considered planet x’s, and were eventually classified as plutoids.

Now that you know the true definition of a planet x, lets talk about the scientific improbabilities of a planet x that is going to travel all the way to the earth. First of all, I have gone to college, and received a PhD in astronomy and astrophysics and I have never heard of nibiru. According to recent data, there may be another planet larger than earth lying in the kupiter belt. this planet would have to be more than 5 light years away. So if it were to suddenly travel at light speed, the fastest possible speed an object can achieve, it would take the planet 5 years to get here. 2012 is less than 4 years away. Besides the mathematic problems, there are scientific problems too. First of all, there is no force that would make the planet travel at light speed. Second, it would have to get through the beatings of countless asteroids, and the gravitational pull of the four gas giants of the outer solar system - Neptune, Uranus, Saturn, and Jupiter. I wouldn’t be surprised if it became a moon of one of those planets on its way. Anyway, if it did get through the gas giants, it has to get through another asteroid belt, as well as mars. It will most likely be shot into outer space, or into the sun where it will burn up. If it did manage, by some miracle, to get in front of the earth, it would be in a different gravitational shell. It would be closer, which means it will orbit the sun faster than the earth, therefore it will move away from us. So that’s not going to happen.

Another theory is about the asteroid. Its going to hit earth or whatever. Here’s why it won’t work: the asteroid has to take the same path to get to the earth as planet x, but it is even smaller, and will take more of a beating. If it got through everything, it would just crash into our moon probably. If it did come to earth, the atmosphere would burn it up so much that there would probably be nothing left for it to hit earth.

All other theories are just as absurd. Nothing is going to happen in 2012, except for the same things that could happen any other year.

Some people will die on this day.  However, some people die every day so that is nothing out of the ordinary.

The Earth's poles shifting is only hypothetical speculation and has never happened as far as we know.  If and when it ever does happen, there's speculation ranging from almost no noticeable change resulting from a slow shift (meaning no damage and destruction) all the way up to major earthquakes and tsunami's resulting from a rapid shift.  

However, please note again that all of this is just HYPOTHETICAL SPECULATION.  

"WILL WE DIE?"  

Yes, we will all die eventually, most likely not all at the same time, but yes, everyone will die.  Our human lifespan is finite and therefore ends at some point.  

"WHAT WILL HAPPEN ON DEC. 22ND?"  

You'll wake up, you'll brush your teeth, you'll eat breakfast, you'll take a shower, you'll probably do some last minute Christmas shopping.  No big deal.
