  3. The Metric System (Systeme Internationale, or SI) does not have a unit of weight, because weight is not a characteristic property of matter.

    Weight depends on the MASS of the object and the gravitational force to which that mass is subjected.  That is why you might weigh, for example, 150 pounds on Earth, but only 10 pounds on the moon.  You have the same mass in each case, but the gravitational force is different.

    Mass is a characteristic property of matter, so the SI units are units of mass -- kilograms.
