tropical - lie between forests and semi deserts. annual rainfall confined to one season, evaporation rate usually high. dotted with such trees as acacia and baobab. most areas have tall elephant grass but near the deserts it becomes shorter.

mid-latitude - less rainfall than tropical, winters extremely cold and snowy. trees are rare. much is now farmland. many grazing animals have been severely reduced in numbers by people. for example the bison. the mule deer has now taken its place as the commonest prairie grazer.

on the grasslands, insects abound, providing food for birds, small reptiles and mammals. most animals are grazing. African grazers are antelopes, buffaloes, elephants, giraffes, rhino, wildebeest and zebra. predators are lions, cheetahs, hyenas, leopards and wild dogs.

kangaroos and wallabies have now largely been replaced by sheep on Australia's grasslands.
