'Thane' is an obsolete title used in the play MacBeth. His wife is called Lady MacBeth there. Is a thane a baron, baronet or other equivalent title in British peerage? Does a thane's wife have a title other than 'lady'? Baroness or thaness (sic) for example?

  1. A thane is the old Scots term for an earl.  The wife of a thane was styled "Lady," as in MacBeth.

In the play, MacBeth was Thane of Glamis and later also Thane of Cawdor before becoming King.

The present Earl Cawdor, Colin Campbell, is the 7th Earl of Cawdor.  Because the title traces back to the days of thanes, he would be considered the 25th thane.

Lord and Lady Cawdor live in Cawdor Castle in Scotland.

  2. Its been updated to meet the "CHAV" age.  "Thane and Thane - etta"

Seriously though I think  "Lady" is the correct title.  I had my husband made a, "Laird" last year.  If he dies, the "title" reverts to me as "Lady" - Looks like the powers that be dishing out titles were a bit unimaginative with us women.  Mind you , the English title, Dame" reminds me of pantomimes.

  3. According to the peerage chart, a Thane seems to be equal to an Earl. A Thane's wife would be a Lady.
