Question:

What is the TWIC card supposed to be for?

My union tells me its required to go into restricted areas of the ship (bridge, engine room, mooring decks, chiefs office...). A sea lawyer says its only necessary to go from the gate to the ship without an escort. I'm more likely to believe a stranger on here than either of those sources.

  1. go to the TSA's website and search for it there.  i just pre-enrolled today.  it is issued by the TSA and is basically a background check allowing you to be unescorted in terminals, ports, refineries etc.  our company was told by a few terminals we often go to that we will need to have the TWIC card as they will not escort thru the terminal or to the ship.

they will be required by April 15, 2009 - and they are good for 5 years, cost $135.00 (they take Visa!)

    good luck!

  2. It is allow you to go unescorted in marine terminals. I can also be used to ID you when you go up the gangway. Ship's don't have the card readers yet so all they can see is your photo, name and date of expiry. I got mine last December.

  3. My husband has to have one for work even though he does not work in or at the port but inside a plant near the gulf Isagest you go ahead and get it . Its much easier and cheaper to go ahead and get it then run the risk of not being able to work . It last  5 years so if it is absolutely necessary you will already have it . The way I understand this there are place's you must have the TWIC then there will be Company's that will adopt the TWIC .So it will be more necessary then you  may think.

  4. "The Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) is a vital security measure that will ensure individuals who pose a threat do not gain unescorted access to secure areas of the nation's maritime transportation system"

TSA has implemented the TWIC program.  The card is to allow you access to security restricted areas in port and aboard vessels.  The vessel operators are to set restricted areas such as the bridge and engine room that you would have to have the card for.  There is suppose to be card readers that will allow you access to the areas, but as to date I have not seen them.  You are to insert your card and touch your thumb enter your passcode and you will be allowed access to that area if you are suppose to be in that area.

The USCG has also required all licensed mariners and people holding MMDs to acquire the TWIC card by Sept 25 2008.  I have had mine since February.
