What is the U.S.G.A.?

I know it's the United States Golf Association, but what exactly is it? is it worth becoming a member?

It is the governing body of golf in the USA. The determine and clarify rules,handicapping and tournament formats,as well as hosting many tournaments such as the US Open. I think it is worth supporting and becoming a member.

If you are a casual golfer, there's no pressing reason to join the USGA. There aren't many obvious benefits -- a hat, couple of publications, etc.

However, if you like making donations to nonprofits, this organization does do a lot for the sport. I've been to the headquarters in New Jersey, and it's quite nice. It's only $15.
