Frankly since the US goverment has a tendency to flex nuts on states that cannot put up a proper fight like Iraq, and avoids ones that can (Like Russia) like the plague. With this in mind, do not expect action any time soon. Plus there is the consideration the US is fighting TWO wars of occupation at the moment and this gives the US the clear LACK of moral authority of telling other nations not to invade people at will and not to mention the more practical issue of the two current wars are already stretching our military to its limit. Standing up for a nation that our ally while we have two fronts and THEN add a third one by starting a fight against a strong enemy in that ally's name would be sure fire failure at best, suicide at worst.

Plus since we have an all volunteer force, this would have more troops be deployed more often and thus encourage them to leave the service sooner, which would cause even further problems.

Frankly the best way to handle this is through diplomacy.

Not to mention there more to this conflict then what the media is saying. What I gather the people in the region the Russians invaded WANT to be part of Russia, yet the Georgians will not let them. When you consider this, its just the start of a more complex picture.
