  7. The United Nations is a group of 187 independant countries who sign up to the to the UN mission.

    The two major funtions are to try to keep peace in the world, and to ensure an equibable and decent life for all.

    Each country has a seat in the General Assembly, and there is a group of five counties, (the victors after WW 2) that constitute the Security Council, with 10 other countries in rotation. The SC deals with security and military matters.

    There is no dould that there ar many defects in the way the the UN has developed since the end of WW 2. A great deal of reform is needed to make the UN really effective.

    The one agency I'm particulary interested in is the UN Human Development Program. Anyone intersted in undertanding the problems regarding poverty, poor education, and lack of economic progerss, etc., in poor coultries could read the annual Human Development Reports, see link below.

  8. It is a nice example of a forum for "international democracy" and "human rights" where five mighty nations agreed to safeguard their interests and the rest of the nations only preach and watch.

  9. An club for countries to be part of so they can make a public complaint against another country with the "world" as an audience.

    The theory is that the nations can vote on a matter, and if they do then the one nation in question is supposed to listen, but that never, ever, ever, ever has happened yet.

    The United States did use the UN during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and it worked. They yelled at the Russians in front of the world, and they eventually backed down. It might've been the older version, The League, but same thing...

  10. The United Nations (original inspired by the League of Nations set up by Woodrow Wilson) Was set up after world war 2 in 1946. The goal of the United Nations was to make sure and prevent another war like world war 2 from ever breaking out.
