    Check the link below to speedtest.net; you can determine the bandwidth of the ISP provider depending on geographic area and service type.   Your situation can vary substanitially, but the test results are pretty good.  Make sure to look closely at the pages that divide the ISP service by region and country.  

    Cable modems can give 5+Mbit/s, whereas DSL can only be 2.5Mbit/s from SBC, but 4.9Mbit/s from ATT Worldview.  In Japan, download speeds can be as high as 14Mbit/s.

    Dial-up is always less than 56kbit/s, and depends strongly on signal line quality.
