Well its difficult to date a hole. Researchers have long said it took 6 millions years to carve the gorge. New reports state a longer time period of 17 million years. As with most things like this, the truth is in the middle.

The Vishnu Schist is the oldest exposed unit in the canyon. It began its formation over 2 billion years ago.
