  1. Thats latitude & longitude...

thats wot map maker yuze for spots on a speer.

Both R serkels that R alwaes at rite angels tu eech other.

  2. That is the latitude :  37 deg and 49 minutes SOUTH of the Equator and the longitude: 144 deg and 58 minutes EAST of the zero meridien (which runs through greenwich, England).

You need a map or globe (go to the library for this) that has Lat. and Long. on it.  It wont be divide so fine as to show each degree, but you can interpolate the points to locate any spot on our planet Earth.

Besides degrees and minutes, the smallest breakdown is in Seconds, shown by " .  Minutes are ' .  Degrees are tiny o's.

Ask the reference desk person at the library to show you how to use maps that have Latitude and Longitude lines on them.

Map reading is very good to learn for hiking, flying and sailing.

You could also probably get some help from someone who has and uses a GPS locator.

  3. If this is for a class, the instructor is trying to show the difference between absolute and relative location.

Relative location is where it relative (compared to) someplace else.Melbourne is in southeast Australia or it is south and west of Sydney. Those are fine if you know Australia but worthless otherwise

Absolute location is just that; where something is ABSOLUTELY or exactly.

Earth's surface is round so it's divided into 360 degrees, like a circle. Absolute location is measured East or West of a line that runs from the North to South pole through England. Then it's measured North or South of the Equator.

144 degrees East means it is 4/5 to the other side (180 degrees would be the opposite side) of the Earth going east. Then, 37 degrees south means its roughly 1/3 of the way from the equator to the South Pole.

Sounds complicated but it's actually pretty simple.

  4. that is the latitude and longitude.  if u dont know how to read it, look at a map and find the two axes showing lat and long and join them at a point -that is where melbourne would be

  5. thats the only way ur gonna know were it is if u cant read a map you'll never know were places are

  6. In a plane x-y graph any point is refered by two coordinates, say (p.q). Similarly a place on the map / globe is usually identified by its latitude and longitude.

    Absolute location is defined as:

Absolute location is the exact spot on the planet where something resides. A good example would be the longitude and latitude of a place. For instance, Lake Maracaibo of Venezuela is at 10°36' N latitude and 71°33' W longitude, which can be expressed as a decimal fraction: 10.6°N, 71.55°W (e.g. for input into Google earth, note though that 71.55°W = -71.55°). Also, Owensboro, Kentucky, is at about 87 degrees west and 37.5 degrees north.

Absolute location can also be the exact spot where something is within a city, such as saying that the city hall is at Fifth and D street.

According to Barron's How to Prepare for the AP Human Geography Exam, absolute location is the exact position of an object or place, measured within the spatial coordinates of a grid system.

Absolute location is the polar opposite of relative location, which is where something is in relation to something else. (Example: By the ice cream shop, By the Lions club)

Now the absolute location of Melbourne is:

    The latitude and longitude of Melbourne, Victoria, is 37° 49' S 144° 58' E.
