My high-school team's setters were recently told to try jump-setting. They haven't worked on it at all in previous years, so they haven't quite got it down yet. But what are the advantages? Especially in <high school>?

  1. Jump set can beat the ball to the net when there is a "bad" pass, without letting the ball go over.

Jump set enables the front row setter to dump the ball and catch the opponent off-guard, so that the opponent would have to put a blocker on the setter.

Jump set can shorten the distance between the set and the quick hit, thus making the quick hit quicker.

Practicing jump set can help the setter get better control thru fingers and wrists, without that much help from waist and legs.

  2. you get more power behind the ball

  3. There are several advantages.

If you jump set and set the 1 in the middle, it is even quicker. Basically, you almost just hold the ball in place and the middle hitter is already there. It is quicker and the opposing middle has to adjust.

Even if you are running a 6-2, jump setting has an advantage. Most of the time, your setter will be back row and can not jump set and send the ball over unless they are short or do not jump well. However, on the occasion where your back row setter has to play the first ball and your front row setter jump sets the ball, they can send it over legally from any height. And the opposing blockers are so used to seeing the jump set, they will not block you.

You will be able to get the passes that are headed over the net.

As a side benefit, I found that my sets were more consistent when I jump set. I never figured out why. My best guess is that I concentrated more when I jump set than when I was on the ground and set.
