What is the advantage of buying SmartTrip card while travelling in metro?

Question

Are there any discounts if we buy SmartTrip card?

I understand that if we buy 10$ card 5$ is the initial fee. Does that mean we can use only 5$ from that card? If so why should we buy it?

Metro tickets can be bought at outlet shops n other places. Is this right and is this convenient?

Can we buy metro tickets from the ride on bus we are travel to reach to metro? If so is it only by cash?

The advantage is having a card you can reload with money for parking and riding the metro.  If you lose it you can get a replacement if you know the number on the card, and if you ever forget and buy a paper ticket you can add it to the SmartTrip card.  Metro, however, is expensive, and unlike the public transit where I live in Vancouver, it is hard to get a discount unless you use the Metro more than just one rise to and from work a day.
