  1. 20. And you often have to pay two or three months rent in advance. Plus "key money". Key money is more or less a bribe to the landlord to allow you to rent the place. This can also be a month or two of rent. This is money you'll never see again.

      If you're non-Japanese you may also need an agent as many landlords won't rent to a gaijin.

  3. You must be at least 20 Years old to rent on your own place. Also some places will not rent to foreigners also.

  4. As far as I am aware you have to be over 21 to rent an apartment.

  5. If you are under 20, you need a guarantor (someone with stable income) who is 20 or over.

    Even if you are 20 or over, you need a guarantor.
