  2. The time since our piece of the Universe emerged from the epoch of Early Inflation is 13.7 billion years.  What happened before that is essentially unknown.  It is possible that the Universe is "past-eternal".

    The age of the chemical elements.

    The age of the oldest star clusters.

    The age of the oldest white dwarf stars.

    The age of the Universe can also be estimated from a cosmological model based on the Hubble constant and the densities of matter and dark energy. This model-based age is currently 13.7 +/- 0.2 Gyr.(Gyr: gigayear, or one billion years).  The actual age measurements are consistent with the model-based age which increases our confidence in the Big Bang model.
