What is the aintree iron?

Well, you can take your pick of three or four really. The golf course near Melling Road is nicknamed the Aintree Iron(could be they don't use woods?)  The locomotive turntable outside the old railway shunting yard was also of that name, as was The Black Bull pub which it is claimed was mentioned in Scaffolds "Lilly The Pink"

However, my favourite, and the last, is that Aintree Iron is the Grit and Determination needed to ride around the Grand National course in olden days when the National really was a daunting race.
