spain can trace its ancestry back to the prehistoric populations of the iberian peninsula. peoples such as the iberians, tartessians, etc. spoke languages unrelated to the indo-european languages of europe; however they are related to basque and berber which harkens back to a day when non-indo-european languages dominated europe. i do not include celtiberian in this group becuase it is indo-european. romans were aware of these peoples and had to use translators when communicating and in the case of tartessian, 2-3 translators were needed. the so-called guanches of the canary islands off the coast of spain were also related to these peoples in language.

The ancestry of Iberians has received influences from the many people which have settled on its territory throughout history including Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Punics, Celts, Vandals, Suevi, Visigoths, Alans, Byzantines, Berbers, Arabs, Slavs, Jews and, particularly in Andalusia, the Roma.

Furthermore, the Spanish population is becoming increasingly diverse due to recent immigration, as a result of the country's strong economic growth. Immigrants now make up about 10% of the population and come mainly from Morocco, Ecuador, Romania, Colombia and other countries in Africa, Europe and Latin America.

This is probably an impossible question to answer simply because the group of people we would call "Spaniards" relates only to the members of the nation of Spain. So technically, there have only been Spaniards around as long as there has been a Spanish nation. It is very easy to conflate 'nationalities' with 'cultures', regions, 'races', 'ethnic groups', etc., but really they are separate things. A great book, a classic, on that whole subject is Benedict Anderson's "Imagined Communities" (1983). Sorry that none of that gets at what you are probably wondering about though! :)
