  1. The original name was "Kandenaolu" which was changed to Kurnool by the Britishers.

    Kandenaolu means "lubricating village" b'coz in olden days the visitors bullock-carts which came to the village lubricated their wheels.


  2. The first name of kurnool was "Kandenaolu", literally "lubricating village".

    Kandena is a black coloured grease which is generally used to lubricate bullock cart wheels in villages.

In 12th century AD, the Odders, who carted stones for the construction of the temple Alampur, used the site on which the town now stands as a halting place before crossing the Tungabhadra and greased their cart wheels with oil locally supplied by some of the oil mongers, and called the place 'Kandanavolu' which in course of time came to be known as Kurnool.
