The cost function for a species of wild fish is estimated to be a function C(x) where x is the number of millions of pounds of this fish caught and C is the cost in millions of dollars. Two points on the graph are (x, C) = (2, 0.0538) and (x, C) = (8, 0.1474). Using this information and assuming a linear model, determine the cost function in millions of dollars for x millions of pounds of fish.

  1. The equation of a line is y = mx + b, where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept.

    The slope is m = (.0538-.1474)/(2-8) = (-.0936)/(-6) = .0156

    The equation becomes y = .0156x + b.

    To find b, we can use either point.

    .0538 = .0156(2) + b

    .0538 - .0312 = b

    .0226 = b

    Answer: c(x) = .0156x + .0226
