  1. First you multiply out the factors:

    If (x-6)(x+5)=0

    then (x^2)-6x+5x-(6*5) = (x^2)-x-30 = 0

    Then, plugging the terms a=1, b=-1, c=-30 into the quadratic root equation:

    x = {(--1) +/- SQRT(1 - 4*1*-30)} / (2*1)

    = 0,5*(1 +/- SQRT(121))

    = half of (1+11) or half of (1-11)

    Therefore, x=6 or x=-5

    In general, the solutions to the quadratic equation y=ax^2+bx+c=0 are:

    x= minus b plus or minus the square root of {b-squared minus 4ac}, all over 2a;

    see reference.

    ___________

    There is of course a quicker and more attractive way to get to the answer.

    If (x-6)(x+5)=0, then, when y=0, x-6=0 and x+5=0, because 0=0*0;

    therefore x=6 or x=-5 when y=0.

    By the way, this is a language - the universal language of algebra.

  2. The easiest way is...

    x(x+5) - 6(x+5)

    = x² + 5x -6x -30

    = x² - x - 30

  3. x ² -x-30

  4. (x-6)(x+5)= x^2 - x - 30

  5. edit.

    (x-6)(x+5)

    x2 + 5x

        - 6x - 30
